ST. CLAIRSVILLE - Ohio
University Eastern senior Lynne
Majzun was recently awarded the
first annual Underground Railroad
Museum Foundation Scholarship.
John Mattox, Underground Railroad expert and Museum Curator,
explained that the privately-funded
and non-profit foundation wanted
to "give back to the community"
by establishing this scholarship
fund.
Mattox insisted that "education
is so important" in understanding
the history and circumstances of
the Underground Railroad era.
"OUE has been fantastic to us. I
am so happy for Lynne that she received this scholarship," Mattox
stated.
"She has an exceptional knowledge of the history of the Underground Railroad and an understanding and relevance to our museum," he added.
Although this is the first scholarship awarded, the foundation by-
laws clearly state that they will continue to recognize students who
exemplify academic excellence.
OUE's established criterion to be
considered for this scholarship required at least a 3.5 GPA with a
concentration (at least 12 credit
hours) in history and political science. Majzun, a 3.8 accumulated
GPA student, and a criminal justice major, exceeded these stipulations.
There were "no strings attached" with this award, according
to Mattox. The $300 figure given
to the honored recipient is a
stipend to help defray the cost of
books.
Dr. David Castle and Dr.
Michael Nojeim, two of Majzun's
OUE instructors, uniformly agree
that she is well-deserving' of the
Underground Railroad Museum
Foundation Scholarship.
Both teachers attest that she is
an outstanding student who is a
role model for demonstrating a
"never too late" attitude in pursuing her degree in higher education
at OUE.
"I want to thank Mr. Mattox
and the foundation for this award,"
Majzun said. "I have received a
superior education here at OUE
and teachers like Dr. Castle and
Dr. Nojeim have made college interesting and exciting. I have
learned a lot throughout the years,"
she added.
Majzun, an Ohio Valley native,
currently lives in Bethesda. She
has two children, Matthew, who
attends Marietta College and
Zachary, a Union Local High
School student and track standout.
