Adda Smith Company H 10th U. S. Colored Infantry Regiment

The grave is marked with a standard Union Civil War upright marker engraved with "ADDA SMITH CO H 10 USCT".  It is located in the Hickory section of Chesapeake, Virginia.  The grave is in a straight line among three older civilian graves on the site of the 18th Century Saint Brides Church.  The church is no longer standing, but is noted with a historical roadside marker.  The site of Saint Brides Church, also known as the Old Northwest Church, is at the intersection of St. Brides Road and Battlefield Blvd, approximately nine miles south of the small town of Great Bridge and 3.5 miles north of the North Carolina state line.  The graves can now be easily seen by tourists and vacationers traveling south on Battle Boulevard (Business Route 168) towards Nags Head, North Carolina and the Outer Banks.   According to Civil War USCT records, Adda Smith served as a private during the latter part of the Civil War, including the Petersburg Siege campaign, and was apparently a post-Civil War resident of Hickory until his death (date unknown at this time).

I hope this helps in maintaining our remembrance of this Civil War veteran.

Best regards,
Mike Villarreal
