"Before Petersburg, Oct. 29, 1864 - I am under the painful necessity of informing you of the Death of your husband, Charles W. Butler. He was killed while on skirmish line accidentally by our own men. -- We buried him as best we could under the circumstances. He now sleeps within the the enemy's line."
