Twenty-five Civil War veterans of the United States Colored Troops are buried on the grounds of Shippensburg’s Locust Grove Cemetery.  These men include: 

Additionally, the cemetery contains eighteen other African-American veterans who served in conflicts spanning from the Spanish-American war through Vietnam.  These men served bravely and risked their lives for their country. 

These silent heroes now need your help.  For over a hundred years, the Locust Grove Cemetery and the burial places of these veterans rested in the midst of Shippensburg’s oldest Black neighborhood.  However, in recent years, the North Queen Street neighborhood has become dominated by student rental properties, apartment buildings, and fraternity houses.  With these changes to the neighborhood has come increased foot traffic through the cemetery, as well as the knocking over of tombstones.  These veterans deserve better. 

We are asking members of the reenacting community to please join us in a dedication and memorial program on May 28, 2007.  Program is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am.  For more information contact Ben Hawley, 29thconn@comcast.net
