RESTING PLACE OF A UNITED STATES COLORED
CIVIL WAR VETERAN
| Jackson Franklin Fisher aka Jerry
Jackson |
Company F, 97th U. S. Colored Infantry
|
Jackson Franklin Fisher enlisted as Jerry Jackson
(because enrolling officer
thought his given name was "too long") as a
Private with Company "F," 97th U.
S. Colored Infantry at Mobile, Alabama, on May 1, 1865, and
mustered out as a
Private on April 6, 1866 near Carrollton, Louisiana, is
buried at the Star
Cemetery,Caddo Parish, Louisiana. He was born on
February 16, 1847 in Mobile,
Molbile County, Alabama, and died on March 18, 1940 in
Shreveport, Caddo Parish,
Louisiana at the age of 93 years.
On June 11, 1870 at Martins Station, Dallas County, AL, he married Ann Bean
who was born on August 12, 1854 in Talladega, AL and died
September 1, 1910 in
Shreveport, Louisiana. (Ann was the daughter of
Charlotte and Sam Bean.) No
children were born to the union of Ann and Jackson F. Fisher
(aka Jerry
Jackson).
His grave marker is marked with his real name of Jackson F. Fisher and states
his military service with Co. F of the 97th USC Infantry.
There is no birth
or death dates on said maker. Star Cemetery, his burial
site, is a national
historic site. My goal is to establish a fund to erect
a more prominent and
informative headstone after completing my research on his
life.
I would like Jerry Jackson, aka Jackson F. Fisher, to be added to your list
of USCT veterans. Let me know if you need any other
information.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I forgot to mention that, according to his Pension file:
(1) His occupation was that of a Methodist preacher and was ordained in 1896.
His work resulted in preaching assignments in Alabama
and Louisiana.
(2) He was once the slave of Colonel Franklin L. Owens, Cashier of the
Mobile Southern Bank, Mobile, Alabama. He was the
family's cook. When Mobile fell
to the Union in 1865, he and a friend (Jim Coleman) joined
the USCT. His
father died about 1863 and was named Jackson L. Fisher.
His mother's name is not
stated in his pension records. He had a brother Peter
Hogan or Hogans in
Mobile, AL; a brother Thomas T. Fisher in Long Beach, MS,
two sisters (one of
whom was named Rachael), and reportedly a twin brother named
Jerry Thomas Fisher
probably residing in Mobile, AL.
