"Rockingham" John Curtis was born a slave in Rockingham County, Virginia in 1830. He died a free man on his own land in Monroe County, Ohio in 1914. He left behind him his wife Jane Early Curtis and several generations of descendants born into a tradition of overcoming adversity. | Laura Curtis was one of the daughters of "Rockingham" John and Jane Early Curtis. John Curtis was born a slave in 1830 but died a free man on his own land at Stafford, Ohio in 1914. Laura was born on that land in 1877 but died very young, at age 17, in 1894. |
